"It's all about the music!"
Paul Needs was born on-stage, clutching an SM58 and smoking a ciggie in the style of Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones; and before he was six months old he was using a Gibson Explorer guitar as a teething ring, hammering out bass riffs like a Norse god, and smashing toy drums kits with his forehead..
As a child, Paul soaked up the music of the era that was being played in the family home by his elder brother, Peter. They had a sister too – so there was Peter, Paul and…. Yep, you guessed it… Jeanette.
At school, Paul was a precocious talent, wasting many hours writing lyrics, designing guitars and playing ancient Grecian kings instead of paying attention in Geography and Chemistry. He abandoned studying “proper” music at 14, at which time he played French Horn and Oboe, and was a member of West Glamorgan Youth Orchestra.
Instead, he was bought a guitar.
That was where it all went wrong. Long hair, combined with a total lack of illicit drugs and alcohol meant that his band, The Reactions, could never fulfill their massive potential.
But having said that, the drummer, Mike Morales, really DID try on the alcohol front, ending up in a coma through boozing on one memorable occasion. Or for him, unmemorable... The guitarist, Peter Watkins simply drank until he couldn't speak; but could tip beans on his stripy trousers. Their first bass player, Gareth Thomas, was a habitual counter of the 'teeth' in zippers...
Of course, most of this is a load of bollocks. But he means it about the French Horn. And the beans and the coma. And the zips...
Paul HAS been playing guitar for some 36 years, and performing solo for around 19 years, following on from successful working bands. He’s recorded four CDs, including one of original songs that continues to sell well via Apple iTunes, as does his swing CD “Hot & Cool”.
He now performs "A Tribute to the Music of the 60's & 70's", covering songs from top acts like The Walker Brothers, Buddy Holly, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Rubettes, Seekers, Animals, Searchers, Shadows, Neil Diamond, Monkees, Beatles, T-Rex, Sweet, Alvin Stardust..
