About / Biography

James is a guitarist of distinction whose appreciation for music of all styles makes him a well rounded and interesting player. He began his training on the classical guitar at the age of 7 and was a multi instrumentalist by his teens, participating in choral singing, playing the piano, violin and of course guitar.

While completing a Bachelor of Music in popular music performance he discovered a love for jazz and specifically the art of jazz guitar arrangement. Previous notable performances around London include the Shepherds Bush Empire and the London International Music Show as well as TV and session work.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

A parking space, an accessible power socket and an armless chair.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, sound provided. Lighting available on request.

What information do you require about a venue?

Where do I load in and where do I set up.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can certainly do this for an extra fee, only because I normally arrive in time to set up, play and leave. If you'd like me to stay longer then please let me know. I also need to know because if I'm not providing a DJ service then, depending on the size of the gig, I may not necessarily be bringing the extra amplification (PA speakers) required. Smaller gigs are usually fine with just the guitar amplifier which isn't suitable for use as a DJ speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Working with the Macallan at the 5* Rosewood London on behalf of Stella and Mary McCartney was a very special experience.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I love the guitar best so I tend to love guitarist's guitarists such as Ted Greene, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Barry Galbraith and so on. The best song of all time depends what mood I'm in!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I've been playing guitar since I was 6 and have fronted trios playing and singing rock and pop, original bands, duos, trios, hired gun type gigs and everything in between. As time went on I became more and more enamoured of jazz and these days I play jazz almost exclusively.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Anywhere warm and dry!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

2 x 50 minute sets with a 10-15 minute break.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Absolutely, if the weather allows it.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Depending on how far away the date is I may have time to learn a song or two. Learning new repertoire beyond two or three songs will likely increase the cost as arranging, learning and practicing chord melody arrangements can be pretty time consuming.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"A beautiful atmosphere"
