About / Biography

Hello!... and welcome to my page. I'm Marcus - singer and musician from the Hampshire/ Surrey borders - performing a mixture of classic swing/ratpack and music from the 50's/60's/70's/80's right through to contemporary songs for dancing. With a live performing background going back 25 years, I am very experienced in working with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. I sing songs from Frank Sinatra right through to George Ezra, so I can alwats find the perfect song choices for your event. With a repertoire of over 250 songs, I pride myself on adapting the music to create the right atmosphere to suit your guests. You can read my ten out of ten reviews - to see what previous customers think.

I sing a nice mix of popular tunes either in the background or as a main focal point, depending on the nature of your party. I can always find the right choice for Wedding Drinks Receptions, Special Birthdays/ Anniversaries or Dinner and Dance events. People are kind enough to say that I have a lovely singing voice and you can decide for yourself by watching my Showreel or listening to any of my audio tracks on the ‘Listen’ section below.

At all the events I play, I provide suitable music through my P.A. before & after the live sets and during the interval, this can be in the background or for dancing as you wish. For weddings, contact me for a quote to include providing dance music for a further hour after the live sets.

For your event, you can choose particular songs you like from my repertoire list if you'd like to. Most customers prefer to just tell me the ambience they want and let me do the rest. I always plan the event with you to make sure we pitch it just right. For wedding bookings, I'll learn your 'First Dance', so you can have it sung live as a personal touch.

I offer a number of different packages when I perform, and typically play during one of the following options...
Bronze Package: Business events/ Anniversaries/ Garden Parties - Up to 60 minutes set of swinging classics to get your guests in the party mood without drowning out the conversation.
Silver Package: Dinner and Dance/ Special Birthdays/ Wedding Anniversaries. Also suitable if booking me for the evening only at a wedding (rather than afternoon & evening combined).
Two live one hour sets, the first set- vintage classics to get the atmosphere going, the second set up-tempo including lights etc. for dancing (Plus suitable music through the P.A. before the live sets & in the interval).
Gold Package for weddings:
1) Drinks Reception - I will create the perfect atmosphere with live music for your Drinks Reception. Before and during the photographs, I entertain your guests with some swing and infectious classic songs. I often perform outside – (depending on the great British weather of course!)
2) Wedding Meal/Breakfast - Swing/Ratpack classics and tasteful background music for you and your guests to enjoy.
3) Evening Party - I'll learn your ‘First Dance’ song and then play upbeat live sets with lights etc. to get all your guests up dancing. I have years of experience choosing the right songs to bring a mixed age group together. I play music playing through the P.A. before the live sets & in the interval. Some wedding couples like to have their own playlist from a phone or ipad after the live sets and there is no extra charge for this for up to an hour. (Contact me for a bespoke quote if you would like to continue for longer after the live sets).

Whichever type of event you are planning, once you have had a good look around my Profile Page, then contact me for a quote and availability. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes, Marcus Boll

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

For P.A. setup, I only need 1 power socket and a space roughly 2 metres across by 1 metre deep
Acoustic setup available (no cables) for smaller venues, space required - 1 square metre
All my equipment has Public Liability Insurance & P.A.T. testing

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, I'm completely self contained. I bring my own PA system to all of our gigs as well as lighting

What information do you require about a venue?

I like to have any directions that will help me find the venue and to know when I can gain access for setting up. It's useful to have a parking space saved for me nearby for unloading if possible.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, I'm happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. I'm happy to choose the music myself to fit the ambience for the event or let the client choose the music.

How much time do you need to set up?

I usually set up about 1 to 1.5 hours before the performance time. As soon as my PA is set up I can provide a free playlist service to help set the atmosphere and get your guests ready for my live performance!
(I also have an acoustic setup option for smaller events using my high quality Bose S1Pro speaker - with this option, setup time is 15 minutes and requires no cables/power).

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, absolutely. I bring my own P.A./lights etc and it's all fully insured and P.A.T. tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Best venue - St. Brelade's Hotel Jersey - beautiful place by the sea, the wedding couple that booked me paid for me to travel over and I'd never been to Jersey before - loved it!
Best gig - my son got married during the Covid restrictions and we held the event in our back garden with a Facebook link for all their friends and family members who couldn't be there. I sang for them and we all cried our eyes out because it's true - love conquers all.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

My favourite singer is Otis Redding, I love all the Atlantic & Motown Soul singers - Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Sam & Dave, Ben E. King. My favourite British singers are the ones I feel bring that soulful grittiness into their performance - Tom Jones obviously but also Paul Rogers (Lead singer of Free & Bad Company) Steve Marriott (Lead Singer of The Small Faces and in recent times, Adele, Duffy and Amy Winehouse.
I also love Jazz, the best singer of all time, in my opinion, is Ella Fitzgerald and in fact this makes it difficult to cover her songs because you can never come close! Frank Sinatra is right up there because a) He was technically excellent, b) He brings a lot of his personality to the songs and, most important - he sings with you not at you. My aim is to bring those 3 elements to all my singing so I'm bringing my personality and my best version of each song.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My Mum says I was obsessed with the record player (vinyl of course!) when I was 3 and I would sing all the 60's hits my parents played. I grew up in various choirs and bands and studied vocals and trumpet, Classical and Jazz. Music took a back seat when my 3 kids were very young but in 2003 I formed a band 'Redzone' with 4 friends and we played pubs, clubs and parties across Hampshire and Surrey for 10 years. This is where I learned to work with the crowd, choosing the right song to keep the dancing going etc. When the band went their separate ways in 2014, I started doing what I do now, singing solo with high end backing tracks that are made for me by a studio in Cambridge. This has allowed me to work as a full-time professional musician, to respond fast to customer enquiries and provide a very large and varied repertoire suitable for lots of different types of events such as Weddings, Special Birthdays, Anniversaries, Hotel/Restaurants and Dinners.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love singing so I'm happy whenever I play live and get to sing my favourite songs!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Bronze package - 45 minutes setup. Performance 1 set x 60 mins.
Silver package - 1 hour setup. Performance 2 sets x 60 mins. or 3 x 45 mins.
Gold package - 1 hour setup. Performance 3 sets x 60 mins.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I often play outside for Wedding Receptions, Garden Parties etc. I have an acoustic setup using my Bose S1 Pro speaker - awesome sound quality & no cables required!
For gigs with more than 50 people - I use my P.A. so then I need access to power. I have extension cables (all P.A.T. tested) as needed.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients can either tell me the atmosphere they want and I'll do the rest or they're welcome to choose their favourites from my repertoire list. For Weddings/ Anniversaries etc. I'm happy to learn your chosen song or songs to make it extra special.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

This example review from a Wedding Drinks Reception gives a good feeling of how clients describe the performances:
“Everyone loved Marcus. He has an amazing voice and is super fun and professional! Couldn’t recommend him more.” Lora - June '23

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I am flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event, no worries, just let me know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. This is a really popular request and I actually offer this service for free. If you'd like a DJ service via my PA after the final set until the venue closes, I provide this for a small additional fee (Probably in the region of £50 depending on how late you want to continue).

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

My set lists are crafted from countless performances and learning what works best to ensure guests can dance and have an amazing time. However, I'm definitely happy to chat through and make sure we find what works for your event. You can certainly choose your favourite songs from my repertoire and I'll fit them in at the right time.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

If a song isn't included in my song list there may still be a chance I already know it. If there is a special song you'd like me to learn - for example for your 'First Dance' I am more than happy to do this for you for free. If you wanted 3 or more new songs - I can do it with sufficient notice and there would be a small additional charge (around £50).
