Mulligan Soup is a piano-less jazz quartet, formed in tribute to the music of Gerry Mulligan's famous 1950's recordings with Chet Baker, Bob Brookmeyer, Art Farmer and many others.
TESTIMONIAL:
A "...refreshing transcription of Gerry Mulligan's 'cool'. You may be surprised, you will be pleased, you will enjoy Mulligan Soup".
(Jazz at the Priestley, Bradford)
The 'Cool' West Coast style was kick-started by Mulligan and Baker with the famous quartet concerts at The Haig, and recordings for Pacific Jazz.
Nick Smith has diligently transcribed many of these recordings to put together a programme to authentically recreate those concerts, and recreate the ambience of those post-war boom times.
Mulligan Soup is made up of four talented professional musicians, with a wealth of experience of many different musical genres:
Benny Lee takes the role of Chet Baker on trumpet, typified by swinging solos and lyrical lines.
Stevie Smith flawlessly copies the minimalist style provided by Chico Hamilton on those first recordings.
John Porter makes up the third interweaving harmony as played by Bob Whitlock to tie the whole thing together, and of course....
Nick Smith's baritone saxophone provides the reason for the whole experience!
