My band is a four piece, with bass, drums and piano - and can be augmented by any number of other musicians including sax, percussion and strings.
All musicians are highly experienced and have gigged all over Europe.
We can play quietly and soothingly in the background or can get into full swinging mode and fill the dance floor. I also have a good repetoire of pop and and soul tunes as I regularly play with Not The Rolling stones (www.nottherollingstones.com) and the Stevie Cook Soul band.
I can also go out as solo piano and vocals and anything up from that.
I have my own album coming out in October - featuring a selection of classic songs arranged by myself and Tom Cawley, and a couple of my own songs. Anyone wishing to check out the band can come and see us there...see below for details.
"Rebecca Thorn is a singer, songwriter and pianist. Her debut jazz album “This Is Why” is a collection of tunes that have heavily influenced her over the years plus a number of her own compositions. The album has a gentle, lyrical quality to it. Produced and recorded by Chris Traves, it features Tom Cawley on piano (“never less than spellbinding”, the Independent) , Mike Thorn on bass and Matt Senior on drums.
Rebecca has spent the past couple of years working with various musicians, including Tom Cawley, Ronnie Paris, Gil Cang, Daniel Maitland, whilst continuing to work on her next album of original material. She also guests in other bands singing backing and lead vocals and playing keyboards. She has performed at, amongst others, the Soho Jazz on the Streets Festival, the Hayne Barton Jazz Festival and the Ealing Jazz Festival.
She has sung on numerous television and radio commercials and written for a number of radio shows, most recently the theme tune for the Fordham and Lipson series “He Barks, She Bites” which is being aired on Radio 4 in August 2008.
She originally trained as an actress and spent many years working at the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Court and in the West End as well as doing television and radio parts. She has just performed a new play “Pastures New” at Latitude Festival 2008 with her own company Birds of Britain.
Her father is the highly experienced and well known bassist Mike Thorn, and her love of jazz goes back to her childhood, where she spent many hours listening to his record collection of Peggy Lee, John Coltrane, Blossom Dearie, Shirley Horn, Miles Davis and many other great musicians.
The Official Launch of the album, featuring the album band, will be at Rays Jazz Shop on Monday 13th October at 7pm. Please email or phone to be added to the Guest list."
“Rebecca Sings Jazz without pretension or ego. She has a wonderful voice, and is almost the only Jazz singer I have recently heard that shows enough respect to the original song.”
Daniel Maitland
Songwriter (Melanie Blatt, Geno Washington), sax player (Trudi Kerr, R.S.C).
“Your tracks sound really nice” Simon Carter, jazz pianist
‘You sound cool!’ Louise Parker, jazz vocalist
