Alam began playing the clarinet at the age of eight, mainly because he thought it was much better than the recorder. This led to the discovery of the saxophone some years later.
Early musical experiences were very funk, rock and latin based, and it wasn’t until he began studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama that Alam fell in love with all (well, most) things jazz. Since graduating Alam has travelled to Tanzania to check out his roots, played lots of music with lots of nice people (including TV appearances with Josh Ritter, McFly, Jane Mcdonald, and performances and radio broadcasts in Porto and on BBC Radio1 with the Heritage Orchestra).
Most recently, Alam finished the jazz Masters course at Trinity College of Music, winning the Gold Medal for performance - the college's highest award, as well as being nominated as a finalist for the Worshipful Company of Musicians' 'Young Jazz Musician of The Year 2009'.
Alam is currently writing for several projects including his quintet 'Pluralism', and performing regularly with the 'Tomorrow's Warriors Jazz Orchestra' and rock outfit 'Kubla Khan'.
