Frequently asked questions

Most string quartets are self-contained and provide their own equipment which is suitable for typical situations. Even though the act generally plays acoustically, if your event is to be held in a large venue, or you have more than 300 guests, we recommend that additional sound equipment should be used. Always ask your musicians about their sound system requirements.

Each event is different but the typical performance time for string quartets is 2 x 45 minutes sets within a 2 hours period. Some acts are happy to play longer sets or additional sets. Often, breaks can be negotiated but you should be aware that the price may increase if the musicians need to be onsite for a longer period of time.

Booking string quartets as early as possible increases the chance of securing their availability on your event date, particularly during busy times of the year. However, many acts also accept last minute bookings, and we have successfully arranged performances for clients with just a few hours' notice.

You should always check whether or not your act is prepared to play outdoors. Weather conditions such as wind, rain, or extreme temperatures can affect the performance and the instruments. If you are planning an outdoor event you should be prepared to offer a flat surface for performers as well as a cover in case of unexpected rain.

The cost of hiring musicians can vary significantly depending on the type of act. The average price is currently £525. Budget-level acts may be available for as low as £100, while top-tier acts can command prices as high as £2690.

Hire the best String Quartets

Ideal for wedding ceremonies and corporate events, a string quartet or ensemble is one of the most versatile forms of live classical music. Before booking a string quartet, you should take the time to consider which parts of your event you want the string quartet to perform. Soon to be married couples often choose to have a string quartet perform during the wedding ceremony playing the hymns along side the organist. Not only does this add to the sound of the hymns giving it an extra dimension, it will also help rouse a sleepy congregation who may not be quite as forthcoming when singing.

String Quartets are also ideal for corporate drinks events or big corporate dinners because of the classy and sophisticated ambience they bring when they perform. By setting the tone for the event, employees will be motivated to network and create new business opportunities. Similarly to a wedding, string quartets will play a mixture of well-known composers as to please everybody attending.

Unlike big bands with drum kits and amplifiers, a string quartet or ensemble usually have little to no technical requirements. A standard string quartet will need four chairs, refreshments, suitable parking and a space to leave valuable belongings and or equipment. The standard line-up is two violins, one viola and one cello.

If possible, book your string quartet or ensemble through an agency or directory, as this will help reduce the chances of things going wrong before your event. All professional musicians booked through an agency will have up to date public liability insurance and PAT tested equipment, a must for any working musician. Regardless of the style of your event, performances of compositions from famous composers such as Handel, Mozart or Elgar will go down very well with your guests. A professional string quartet or ensemble will create a wonderful atmosphere, making your special day a cut above the rest and hire one today.

About modern string quartets

The traditional string quartets of today are nearly unchanged, since their beginnings and use from the Baroque era. As a musical ensemble, the traditional string quartet contains four primary players on stringed instruments. Generally, the quartet will include a cellist, a violist and a pair of violin players. This combination of players has been the most distinctive and predominantly used for chamber ensembles throughout the history of music. The string quartet has been the favored formula of the great classical musicians and composers worldwide, since the late 18th century and even today.

Hire String Quartets

A body of works and musical history

Many volumes of classical and contemporary music have been written to specifically be played by string quartets over the last few centuries. This has continued during the past few decades, allowing for the classical string quartet to find it's way into the works and performance of many newer musical styles. Today string quartets are known for playing musical pieces from traditional classical composers, jazz artists, Latin music, rock standards and other genres such as new age, or even more progressive styles like electronica or big beat music. This is another bonus with most string quartets, their available body of musical works is large. So therefore is their repertoire.

A sound known all around the world

No other musical ensemble is as familiar to the ear as the four part string quartet. All throughout the world, the sound of the traditional string quartet is well known and still considered contemporary in style. It is made almost instantly recognizable by it's four part harmonies, but also due to the many famous compositions written for it's unique and distinctive sound. String quarters are known also, for the way they bring out the best characteristics of musical ensemble, by demonstrating the power of the four part collaborative unity between individual players. This familiarity will lend itself to any audience today, as string quartets always receive pleasant responses from crowds of any size.

As traditional and popular today as ever

Without a doubt, the string quartets in modern times have a special place in musical performance and are as popular as ever. Sting quartets make for an excellent choice as wedding music, outdoor event performers and anywhere that requires both style and finesse for the audience. Events that want an excellent mix of high society and classical artistry will find a string quartet fits in nicely. In fact, modern string quartets have made their way back into chic status and have come full circle. They are brand new for younger audiences.

Make sure that your event has the proper staging and acoustics ahead of time, as most string quartets do not bring a sound system. Ask anyone about such details before booking them for your event, but rest assured that hiring any modern string quartet will bring life to the most ordinary party. Take the time to see what four string players can do for your event, wedding or other activity this season.
