About / Biography

Stephen is an experienced and sensitive pianist and accordionist, as well as being a gifted musical comedian.

My gigs recently have been performing candle-lit concerts - 'Twilight Date Night' - in Thame, Luton, Reading, Bedford, Hitchin and many other towns, which have been a great success, and playing piano for corporate clients Rock Capital and On Air Dining as well as private birthday celebrations and hotel functions. Also in the last few months include two big Romany events in Leicester where I played Irish favourites on the accordion, and an Italian restaurant in Surrey where I played tarantellas and Italian opera arias on the accordion. Sometimes I'm asked to play a mixture of piano and accordion. I enjoyed playing on Valentine's Day for Peggy Porschen Cake Boutique -- and have played two years running for the Goodwood Race Club in Sussex for their Beaujolais Nouveau wine-tasting supperI.

As pianist, I have been touring a candlelit piano concert called Twilight Date Nights, performing in Hitchin, St Albans, Harpenden and my next performance is on Sat 10th June at the Pump House, Watford.

I was a resident musician at Kettner's restaurant for many years, and have deputised at the West Lodge Park Hotel, Hadley Wood over many years. I have played piano and accordion for many weddings and corporate functions, and my repertoire is very wide: on accordion my particular specialty is French chanson and Italian repertoire, Tarantella Napolitana, Volare etc and on the piano my repertoire ranges from Chopin, Schumann, Debussy and Satie to Brubeck, Fats Waller. Carlos Jobim, and Gershwin, Porter, and American standards, and Simon Garfunkel Billy Joel and the Beatles, to Cockney pub songs, and much more- see the excellent reviews.

I have also played for many broadcast television programmes and films, including the recent Sundance Festival hit, 'The Moo Man', two ITV documentaries on Diana, Princess of Wales, 'The World's First Computer' for BBC4, 'Charlotte: A Royal at War' for BBC Knowledge and the critically acclaimed 'Lost World of Mr Hardy' for cinema release.

I studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music with Dr Frank May, and has a First Class degree in Music from Christ Church College Canterbury; and a Postgraduate Fellowship in Composing Music for Film from the National Film & TV School. I have played piano for theatre shows such as the Arts Theatre hit "The Madness of George Dubya"as well as performing my own comedy show 'Ludwig's Van.' (Four stars at EdinbuIrgh Festival 2006)

Stephen gained a Four Star review at the Edinburgh Festival for his musical comedy show, Ludwig's Van. He is a professional Equity member, performer, and enjoys performing a comedy at the piano which is about classical music particularly, in the style of Victor Borge.

The Pheasantry Pizza Express Live described Stephen thus: " It’s like Eric Morecambe goes classical. Imagine J S Bach writing his latest masterpiece whilst supervising a creche of 21 children. Stephen Guy Daltry acts it out. This award-winning Film/TV composer makes a welcome return to the Pheasantry with his mirth-filled musical tour, part autobiographical, part concoction; it’s a comical mix of sketches, one liners, songs and anecdotes, laced with beautiful piano-playing, the odd tango and his own unique compositions." He performed two shows recently at the Pheasantry, (Pizza Express Live) King's Road and was interviewed on London Live.

“The boisterous comedy talent of Stephen Daltry” is how the Stage describes him

I perform a musical comedy show at the piano, which has lots of musical jokes, and sketches about Bach and Beethoven, and also impressions of performers including Elton John; I have performed this at the Pheasantry Pizza Express Live in the King's Road and at Edinburgh Fringe (Four star review).
I can do a bespoke event for your event, writing and performing comic material if given enough the client information in advance.

I have played accordion on films and television programmes such as BBC Scotland's forthcoming film 'Of Fish and Foe' and 'The Mooman' (Sundance Festival 2013 hit); Recent accordion bookings include Hampton Court Palace 500th anniversary celebrations , the Tour de France event for York City Council, Renault Car Showrooms in Derby, and many weddings, both beach and church! He plays a 120 button Sonola Accordion, (bought from Bruno Allodi in 1984!) his repertoire covers Piaf & French chanson, film music (Amelie etc), English folksong, classical music, and much more. He likes to research what the client's favourite pieces are and learn them for the occasion.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

If the client doesn't have a piano, I have a touch-sensitive keyed Korg piano with in-built speakers. I just require a mains socket in the room.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

No.

What information do you require about a venue?

It would be good to know the approximate size of the venue if I am bringing a keyboard and amp.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Playing to a full house of 240 people at the Luton Library Theatre recently and that was the best venue.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Most influenced by Gershwin and Debussy, Bach, and in terms of music comedy, Victor Borge, my favourite artist is Marta Argerich. Very hard to pick - I often play 'My Funny Valentine', and 'Long Ago and Far Away.' (Jerome Kern)

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have composed for film and TV for thirty years, and have been gigging for almost as long as that.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing at birthday parties and restaurants.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

For accordion it takes no time at all to set up. I just need a chair and a table.

With my own keyboard only 10 minutes or so set-up time. I can do two forty-five minute sets with a break in between, or am flexible as to what the client would like.

With my comedy show, which can be an hour, or half hour, depending on the client's requirements, I need at least half an hour to set up. I prefer if there is an existing piano - grand piano or upright piano - at the venue, but if not I can bring my own.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I'm happy to play outside but I ask for shade, a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.
For the accordion it is great to be outside, it's such a reverberant instrument.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

They absolutely do have a say in what I play. I always like to prepare a song or piece or set of pieces that has particular sentimental meaning for the client.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers have said "played beautiful music that was perfect for the atmosphere" and another "Stephen was an absolute star! Made my evening so special."

Is it true that you Address the Haggis as well as play Scottish music on accordion?

Yes, I've done that very successfully, as I am both a professional actor as well as a professional musician.
