About / Biography

The Vintage Singer is a retro style songstress who will take you back to your era of choice with her sultry vocals and wide ranging repertoire. You will recognise her instantly as she will look like she has been transported direct from more glamorous times of the past to entertain you with her powerful voice and vintage style charm.

Claire offers themed sets from the Gatsby era (roaring twenties through to the thirties) with a mixture of authentic vintage and modern pop songs arranged to sound like songs of the times, to a 1940s wartime tribute (Andrews Sisters to Vera Lynn), to swing revival sets (think Sinatra meets Ella Fitzgerald). Also available is a 1950s afternoon tea set. All of these sets include Claire made up and dressed as a star of the times... be it finger waves of the 1920s, victory rolls of the 40s... whatever fits your theme.

While vintage jazz and swing from the 1910s to 1960s is undoubtedly her forte, due to public demand and an ability to adapt to any style, Claire is equally comfortable performing a full set of modern pop/rock/soul as she is mixing swing/vintage soul/motown/rock and roll and other retro sounds. She has studied to gain her singing qualifications to a professional standard with outstanding feedback from London College of Music examiners on her distinct jazz style vocal. She is a fully qualified vocal coach and uses the discipline that she teaches to ensure her vocal performance is 100% impressive.

The Vintage Singer works with you to provide exactly what you want in terms of mood, type of set such as laid back or upbeat and even outfits/costumes (especially for themed events such as Wartime or Gatsby). She is dedicated to providing a professional service and authentic experience and you can take control, if you wish, by choosing the option of a bespoke set list made up from her repertoire of over 300 songs.

Recent bookings include a variety of clients from corporate events at five star hotels, to intimate blues bars, to holiday parks, to private wedding celebrations in quaint village halls.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

As a solo I only need one parking space (preferably close to a door into the building) and two plug sockets (a double is fine) close to my set up area.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes I am self-contained and can bring my own PA system for medium/large events or have a smaller set up for small events.

What information do you require about a venue?

I need to know where I can park to load in, whether I will then need to move my car/where to move it to.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes I am happy to play music before/between sets. I can stay to play music after my set for an additional charge. The music can be your choice if you wish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I performed at the Christmas Wishes event for CW Sellors at Chatsworth House. I had to model jewellery while singing which meant wearing some very expensive and beautiful diamonds while serenading the shoppers with jazz/cabaret music.

Another fun event was a Peaky Blinders themed cruise where I worked with a team that included lookalikes of the main characters in the show. All the guests dressed in the style of the show and got into the spirit of the roaring twenties!

I have also performed my Peaky/Gatsby show for a corporate event at Arley Hall which was used in the Peaky Blinders series as Thomas Shelby's House. It is definitely a great part of being a performer - seeing all of these beautiful places.

Each year I do a number of 1940s wartime events around the country which are so much fun as everyone arrives in 1940s clothing, they know the songs of the era so join in with singalongs, dance to the upbeat numbers, and the atmosphere is always fantastic.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I love all of the jazz greats, especially Ella Fitzgerald. Though it was Amy Winehouse's music that led me down the path to my love of jazz. She cited people such as Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington as her influences and this led me to explore the genre and start singing the songs from the 20s, 30s and 40s.
I can't possibly pick a favourite song but Too Darn Hot and The Lady is a Tramp are a lot of fun to sing.

Postmodern Jukebox songs are also a lot of fun as they are vocally challenging but it means you have the scope to play around with them too. The PMJ version of Bad Romance is another favourite.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I always sang at school, in the shows and I was in the choir as well as the orchestra as I played clarinet too. Once I left I still loved to sing but was never brave enough to get up on my own, until a friend took me to an open mic which was terrifying but I enjoyed the buzz of singing so much and got great feedback from the audience. So I went back again and again until I decided to get my own PA system and start performing professionally.

I started out doing pubs with my modern sets and vintage fairs. I then had events around the country inviting me to perform, and have gone from there.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love any event where people want to get dressed up. Either in their best clothes for a wedding, or in 1920s attire at a Gatsby ball, or 1940s clothing at a wartime weekend.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

It takes me around 30mins to set up once loaded in. I can work in small spaces or on big stages - so my set up is versatile.
I can perform for up to 3 hours, but am usually booked for 2 * 45 minute sets. I tend to work around the needs of my clients rather than dictating timings so this is very much open to discussion once booked.

Are you happy to perform outside?

As long as there is adequate cover for the weather conditions, e.g. shade on a sunny day, shelter if wind or rain is forecast or likely (a gazebo with sides). There has to be a power supply close by unless my battery amp is being used and a flat level surface for my equipment.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I have an extensive repertoire list from the early 1900s to modern music. Clients can choose from this and I can learn up to three songs for an event if backing tracks are available (sometime obscure requests are more tricky to fulfil!), as I know often songs have sentimental value or couples want a particular song to walk up the aisle or as a first dance.

I sometimes ask clients to choose a few songs or tell me what theme they would like then I will put a set list together for them if they do not want to choose their own.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers have said I am an amazing singer with a powerful voice and an excellent choice of songs to suit their event and get people involved in the theme either by dancing, singing along or feeling the right vibe for the party. They also comment on how I dress for the theme e.g. glamorous 1920s, 1940s wartime, etc.
