Yaron Engler

Born and raised in Haifa, Israel Yaron began playing the drums at the age of 15 winning the country’s national Telerock Competition with the band Vitrage in 1993 at the age of just 18. He went on to work with recording artists in Israel including Yoni Embar, Ari Gorali, Yeladujazz and Nir Yaniv and performed live with 40º, The Tommy Moors Blues Trio, Avital Pasternak, The Stone Cold Gentleman among many others. He also played drums for Fame – the musical in Barcelona.

In 1998 Yaron met tap artist Sharon Lavi and they began to work together on the show Keshev Ketzev, which toured extensively in Israel to audience and critical acclaim. Following the success of this collaboration they formed Tapeplas, a company that combined tap dance, music and rhythm in Barcelona, Spain where they successfully produced the shows BoomBach and Monkeys, which toured throughout Spain, and internationally to Italy, Germany and the USA with Yaron as Musical Director and composer. Their most recent production Epic was co-produced by Mercat de les Flors Barcelona’s leading dance venue. The work in Tapeplas inspired Yaron to experiment with drumming and rhythm based performances creating several short stand alone numbers featuring visual composition as well as percussion arrangements which were subsequently incorporated into the company’s repertory.

Yaron has been working with the world acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter since 2006 collaborating on the research for the score of Uprising and as a percussionist for In Your Rooms. Following his move to London in 2009 Yaron worked as Lead Percussionist on the Choreographers Cut at London’s Roundhouse and most recently on Political Mother for which Yaron is both lead musician and with Shechter created the percussion arrangements. Yaron has been touring with the Hofesh Shechter Company around the world (Europe, Asia, North America, Middle East).

Through his collaborations with dance Yaron has found a unique outlet for his talents and interest in rhythm and movement and he continues to pursue the possibilities of these elements in all his work. Education is an important part of his work and he keeps teaching rhythm, drums, percussion and improvisation, working with musicians and dancers around the world (UK, Israel, USA, Japan, Korea, Spain).

Yaron graduated Summa cum Laude (the highest distinction) from the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, U.S.A in 2003.
